Warwickshire is a county inside the borders of the West Midlands area of England, just three miles from the Derbyshire border, and its county town is Warwick. The town is most notable for being the place where William Shakespeare was born; it is often referred to as Shakespeare’s county. The area was important during the Industrial Revolution for its engineering, coal mining, cement production and textiles, although like many parts of England this has long been in decline. The county first came about in the 11th century as part of the kingdom of Mercia and the first recorded reference to the area was in 1001.

Warwickshire is home to the University of Warwick and to a number of famous public schools, the most notable being Warwick School, founded in 940 and the oldest boys’ school in England and King Edward the sixth School, founded in the 13th century. In 1868 Rugby School was described as one of the great public schools in the country.

Present day Warwickshire has a population of just over half a million people with most of them living either in the centre or north of the county. Besides Warwick and Stratford upon Avon, the county is made up of a number of market towns, including Nuneaton, Rugby, Atherton and Bedworth. In addition to these towns there are also the prosperous towns of Kenilworth, Royal Leamington Spa and Alcester. The south of the county is only sparsely populated and encompasses a small area of the famous Cotswolds. There are no cities in the county of Warwickshire.

Warwickshire contains a good mix of local authority, housing association, private rented and owner occupied accommodation. The historic nature of the county and its association with Shakespeare means that there is plenty for the visitor to see. Coombe Abbey, Warwick Castle and School, Kenilworth Castle and Mary Arden’s House to name but a few. Shopping is quite varied in the county and there are a number of parks and some beautiful countryside in and around the area.
