Sheffield is a metropolitan borough and major city in the south of Yorkshire, in England. Sheffield has a population that is close to 600,000, making it one of the country’s eighth largest regional cities. There is evidence that the area has been a place of human habitation as long ago as the Iron Age. Following the end of the Roman occupation it is believed to have been part of the Celtic Kingdom of Elmet. The emerging area consisted of different settlements that eventually merged to become Sheffield. Sheffield castle was built following the Norman Conquest and in 1296 there was a market in the place that is now referred to as Castle Square. During the late 1570s Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned in the castle for a number of years.

Sheffield was famed for its knife production as early as the fourteenth century, this, together with the introduction of what became known as Sheffield Plate were central to the growth of Sheffield as an industrial town. The town experienced varying in fortunes throughout the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and in 1893 was given city charter. Like some other English cities of the time Sheffield had a large area of slum housing. While the city still has a range of historical buildings, most of the slums were cleared during the nineteen fifties and sixties and replaced with a new housing scheme and road system.

The city has a large student population and has been home to the University of Sheffield since 1905 and to Sheffield Hallam since 1992. The city is well known around the region for its wealth of shopping facilities, with a number of modern shopping centres in addition to the old Castle Market. There is plenty to attract visitors to Sheffield although it has a lower number of Grade 1 listed buildings than most other major English cities. There is a city farm and the Sheffield Walk of Fame was instituted to honour famous present and past residents of the city. The area has a number of theatres and museums and has produced some famous bands and museums including Joe Cocker and the Arctic Monkeys.
