A local government Act of 1972 established Humberside as a new county, including a large part of Yorkshire’s East Riding along with parts of Lindsey in Lincolnshire. In 1981, the Humber Bridge, which was designed as a link between the disparate areas of the county, was opened. In 1996 the county was dissolved and four unitary authorities were named, the East Riding of Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire, Kingston upon Hull and North East Lincolnshire. In spite of the dissolution, the area is still referred to largely as Humberside.

The area is home to Humberside Airport and Hull University and in the past was known as an industrial hub, Humberside once had a huge fishing industry. Visitors are often delighted with the tranquillity and natural beauty of many parts of the area, the East Riding in particular has always been a favorite with walkers. There is only one major city located in Humberside and that is Kingston upon Hull, usually referred to simply as Hull – with its famous aquarium and collection of museums and galleries. Other towns in the area include Grimsby and the seaside town of Cleethorpes, which was very popular in both Victorian times and in the first half of the twentieth century.

Grimsby was once a famed and busy fishing port and visitors go to see the Fishing Heritage Centre. Most visitors to Cleethorpes are taken with the architecture and the old style pier; there is also a theme park and discovery centre for visitors to enjoy.

Further inland the area of Humberside is different again and is comprised of a number of villages, hamlets and small towns. Hornsea is also a coastal area and there are plenty of birds and a variety of wildlife for visitors to enjoy. There is a variety of local markets in and around the area, including Beverley market in the town of Beverley. Beverley is a market town with a well known racecourse; it is also home to Beverley Minster.

Given the variety of towns and village encompassed by Humberside, there is a wide variety of housing, both owner occupied, local and housing authority properties.
