Derby is in the county of Derbyshire in the East Midlands area of England and lies along the banks of the River Derwent. The city can be dated back to the Romans and the Saxons – the Roman name for the city was Dervention and is thought to have been drawn from the name of the river – the word means oak. By the early seventeenth century the town was referred to as Darby or Derbye.

By the start of the eighteenth century the area was one of the main centres of the Industrial Revolution and was the first in the country to have a silk mill powered by water. Joseph Wright the painter and Erasmus Darwin, the grandfather of Charles Darwin had close links with Derby. Derby became known as a centre of engineering throughout the nineteenth and into the twentieth century and by the mid-nineteenth century was home to the Midland Counties Railway.

In the early years of the twentieth century Derby experienced industrial growth on a large scale, including the formation of the famous Rolls Royce Company in 1907. Derby also became a major player in rail manufacturing only slightly behind Wolverton and Crewe. In the nineteen sixties Derby was not just an engineering centre, it also became known due to the success of Derby County Football Club under the leadership of Brian Clough. The team was first promoted to first division league in 1969.

In 1977, the year of the Queen’s silver jubilee, Derby was granted city status and the charter scroll was presented on the steps of the council house on July 28th of that year. Nowadays Derby is a bustling city of more than a quarter of a million people with immigrants from many different parts of the world. Modern day Derby is a mix of different cultures and by and large people live very peacefully together. The coming of the Westfield Centre has made Derby a great place to shop for people in and around Derby. The city has a good mix of restaurants and bars and several night clubs so there is plenty to entertain visitors looking for somewhere with a lively night life.
